Lafayette, Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Choice association Manuscript Letter Signed "Lafayette," in English, 1 page, 4to, Paris, August 17, 1832. He writes French-born American jurist and scholar Peter Du Ponceau of Philadelphia, president of the American Philosophical Society, introducing "a most interest traveller, Mr. Charles Nagy, of the Hungarian Academy. He visits the United States with the view to inform himself of the Institutions of the Country. He is a patriot of the first distinction and can give you every particular respecting his own country. I think I render a double service by making you acquainted." He adds in an Autograph Postscript in French that Mr. Nagy would be honored to visit the Philosophical Society. Integral address panel with holograph note in English by Lafayette that the letter goes "By Mr. Charles Nagy." With red wax seal. Seal hole in address leaf, clip stain on recto, minor fold and edge wear, but VG indeed. Charles Nagy had already established himself as an astronomer and mathematician, and was welcomed warmly by the American Philosophical Society. He established ties between the Society and scientists in Austria and Hungary, keeping both sides up to date on new scientific developments.
