Three Albums Containing Over 1,500 Different Notgeld Examples. [Approx. 1,500+] Notgeld is the German name for emergency money issued mostly in Austria-Hungary, Germany, and their territories near the end of World War I. These colorful and often whimsical notes were issued by savings banks, municipalities, and private and state owned firms. The notes were not officially legal tender, acceptable for all debts, but they did circulate widely. Our consignor enjoyed collecting stamps, and bank notes, and he had his own unique way of organizing his notgeld collection - he attempted to find a stamp with a cancellation from each town where there was a notgeld issuer. While he was not completely successful, the vast majority of the towns are represented by stamps. The notes are stored in three large albums, each note carefully held in place by corner pockets. For a complete list of the towns, and the number of notes per town, please call 800-556-7826.
