Hawaii. 1880 Wailuku Plantation 1 Real Token. NGC VF25. Medcalf 2TE-6. A significant and early plantation token issuance and for the historian of agricultural history, among the neatest relics one can imagine. According to the often-referenced Hawaiian Money, by Donald Medcalf and Ronald Russell, The First Wailuku Sugar Co. employed 160 men and produced 1,600 tons of cane sugar in 1880. Two token denominations - 1 Real and Half Real - were struck by plantation blacksmiths and issued as payment to its many laborers. The present, well used and pleasing in appearance, retains glossy red-brown in the fields with darkening toward the protected devices. No marks are of note. A popular "Redbook" variety with demand that far outnumbers the supply.
