1801 10 Dollars. NGC AU55. BD-2, R.2. Among a large swath of collectors, the first years of U.S. mint coinage were, and to this day remains, the high watermark of artistic expression in American coinage. Coupled with the intriguing history, and lasting name-power, that surrounds the time - George Washington´s second term as President, his passing of the torch to John Adams, and then to Thomas Jefferson, and so on - the types in all denominations carry an undeniable appeal. The present example, the largest denomination of its day, certainly sits even further elevated, as its striking in gold, size, and limited survival rate truly gives it elite distinction that few ever have the change of calling their own. The present specimen remains nicely detailed due to a bold central strike and only minor highpoint softening that doesn´t distract in the least. The fields, unlike many examples that survive at this level, don´t hold much in the terms of coin to coin contact, but do show light handling, perhaps much of it a result of passing over counters and coming in and out of pockets. Desirable orange-red patina highlights the devices and enhances the eye appeal. Loupe inspection does reveal several wispy marks on Liberty´s portrait and above the eagle´s right wing on the reverse, but these blend relatively well into the fabric of the coin. All told, a wonderful opportunity for the collector to take the plunge and acquire what will surely always be considered among the most desired types in American numismatics.
