†Samoa 1895 (4 Apr.) mourning envelope marked "S.S. Mariposa via San Fransisco" to Hamburg, bearing Germany 20pf. blue tied by boxed "bezault/Kaiserl. Deutsche Postagentur/Apia" d.s. and showing arrival c.d.s. (25.5) on reverse. Very rare. Photo Estimate £ 800-1,000 Note: On 1 April 1895 a fire was raging in Apia which threatened the German Consulate and Postal Agency. While the supply of postage stamps was saved, the datestamp was lost in the hurried evacuation of the building. The re-introduction of the Bezahlt (Paid) datestamps was from early April until ealrly September
