Commonwealth (1649-60), Pattern Halfcrown, 15.07g., by Blondeau, 1651, m.m. sun on obv. only, shield of St. George within a wreath formed of a palm and laurel branch, rev. conjoined shields of St. George and Ireland, value above, edge truth and peace 1651 (olive-branch) petrvs blondeus inventor fecit (palm-branch) (ESC 444), small scratch in reverse field, very fine or better, very rare Estimate £1,500-1,750 provenance: Purchased Baldwin, 1944 Notwithstanding ESC, the TRVTH AND PIECE reading is the rarer of the two inscribed edge varieties found on Blondeau pattern halfcrowns and the R3, R2 rating of ESC 443 and 444 should probably be transposed. The Blondeau patterns in the collection were acquired from Baldwin as one purchase and, despite the identity of design, they have more affinity with each other than with the currency issues
