D.F.M. London Gazette 27.03.1945. 1558014 Sergeant A. W. McKinnon No. 10 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
The Recommendation states: 'Sergeant McKinnon was the rear gunner of a Halifax aircraft detailed to attack Amiens on the 12th June, 1944. He sighted two enemy fighters approaching and passed evasive directions to his Captain. As the fighters closed in for attack, Sergeant McKinnon got in an accurate burst of fire on one of the fighters which was seen to burst into flames and crash on the ground. This aircraft was claimed as destroyed. The remaining enemy aircraft broke off the attack. During a sortie on Blainville on 28th June, 1944, his aircraft was attacked by an F.W. 190 shortly after leaving the target area. Once again, he handled his guns with cool determination and the enemy fighter burst into flames, crashed on the ground and was claimed as destroyed. On 1st July, 1941, during a sortie on St. Martin L'Hortier, his aircraft was damaged by flak on the way to the target. After the target was bombed, the crippled aircraft was attacked by an F.W. 189. He returned the enemy's fire and the fighter broke off the attack. The Halifax became unmanageable and the crew were ordered to abandon the aircraft. Sergeant McKinnon landed in German occupied territory but succeeded in evading the enemy and returned to this country in September, 1944. By his skill, courage and determination, this N.C.O. thus twice extricated his crew from a perilous situation. I consider his devotion to duty, gallant conduct and extreme coolness in the face of danger thoroughly merits the immediate award of the Distinguished Flying Medal for which I strongly recommend him.'
