Southern Rhodesia, Elizabeth II (1952-), VIP double proof Crown set, 1953, bust right, rev. bust of Cecil Rhodes over three shields (KM.PS4 - "3 double sets struck"), slightly handled, one reverse dulled, otherwise mint state, in original red twin case, gilt tooling, with accompanying letter of presentation from the Southern Rhodesia Currency Board to the Governor of Southern Rhodesia, an extremely rare VIP presentation set, only 3 struck, particularly interesting with the full history of its presentation Estimate £ 1,000-1,500 The letter, dated 22nd May 1953, starts "Dear Sir John, On behalf of the Southern Rhodesia Currency Board I have much pleasure in asking you to accept a case containing two crown pieces, which have been struck to commemorate the Centenary of Cecil John Rhodes". After a lengthy description of the coins it concludes "I should like to take this opportunity of thanking you, on behalf of the Board, for all the help that you have given to us in arranging for the presentation to the Queen Mother and in checking our lists of presentations."
