Celtic Britain, Catavellauni, Tasciovanus (25-10 B.C), AV Stater, 5.51g., Third coinage, 15-10 B.C., Verulamium mint, inscription on vertical wreath, TASCIO RICON, rev. Celtic warrior, wearing chain-mail, with spear and shield, on horse left, pellet in ring motive below, (VA 1780-5; S 219; BMC 1629), a little softly struck on reverse, good very fine, rare Estimate £ 1,100-1,300 This coin, struck at Verulamium (Prae Wood, St Albans), shows clearly the fact that celtic warriors wore chain-mail. A recent excavation nearby has found the grave of a high-ranking individual buried with his chain-mail neatly folded as a cushion for his head, and can be seen in the Verulamium Museum.
