POSTAL HISTORY England, Scotland and Wales 1839 (23 Dec.) entire from London to Portsmouth, the address panel showing part black "Woolwich EO/1 py P.Paid", overstruck by faint red London Paid c.d.s. with superb strike of an unrecorded red "1" alongside, also showing faint pencil manuscript "paid 4"; fine and most unusual, the only recorded example of a handstruck 1d. mark in the Uniform Fourpenny Post period.
