POSTAL HISTORY England, Scotland and Wales 1839 (14 Oct.) entire letter from Rio de Janeiro to London, the address panel showing the only recorded example of the black framed "ship letter/tenby", rated "1/-" in manuscript, which was made up of 8d. for the ship rate plus 4d. for the Uniform Fourpenny Rate, the reverse with Tenby (23 December) and London (25 December) datestamps; filing fold with a few light stain spots but clear of the margins and not detracting. The front of the cover is inscribed "Eleanore Sophia, Falmouth" and it may be assumed that the ship was badly off-course (probably due to bad weather) and landed on the Welsh coast rather than the south coast of Cornwall.
