POSTAL HISTORY England, Scotland and Wales 1591 (13 Nov.) entire letter from John Ayton in Exeter to "my good ffrind Mr. Philip Corseene, Merchant Stranger in Gratious Streete in London" and "post 4d" in a different hand, interesting content, in typical coded hand showing six different merchant marks, in plain text Ayton writes "9 bags of pepper came to your hands ill conditioned. I wish you had berated the carrier for it, that he might have taken more care hereafter"; very fine. This is the latest of the five known 4d. rate letters from Exeter and the last recorded date before the introduction of the increased 6d. rate. A great rarity and one of the most spectacular from the Corsini correspondence. Photo
