Lot: 19

POSTAL HISTORY England, Scotland and Wales 1794 (28 Dec.) entire letter from Bastia, Corsica to Tooting, the reverse with very fine strike of the extremely rare black "p.p" London Foreign Office Transfer Stamp and "FE/23" Foreign Office Bishop Mark; slightly refolded with some minor perimeter faults, otherwise fine. Interesting content, the letter written by a subaltern from the British Garrison at Basti during the Revolutionary War, including "There is scarcely a healthy looking person on the island...... there are three Corsican Battalions..... their manner of fighting is what we call bush fighting, that is to take a steady aim up on anyone, from behind a bush...... P.S. If I have made many blunders in this letter I ascribe it all to a pretty Corse who has been chatting to me all the time from the opposite window". Photo Estimate £ 600-800
