†Charles I, Newark besieged, Sixpence, 1646, small crown with jewelled band between cr, vi below, rev. obs: newark 1646 in three lines (Hird 267 (same dies); N.2642; S.3146), lightly scratched on crown, toned and struck on an unusually full flan, good fine, scarce Estimate £ 700-800 The flan of this coin bears traces of a beaded border well outside the sixpence design. It is possible that, due to its large size, this piece was initially struck as a shilling and was then correctly restruck as a sixpence.
