Edward VI (1547-53), second period, Half-sovereign, 5.30g., Southwark mint, young crowned bust right, with decorated breast armour, reads edward vi, rev. crowned oval garnished shield with er at sides, scvtvm fidei proteget evm, small square/rosette stops, m.m. y (Schneider -; N.1911; S.2438), very lightly creased, otherwise a pleasing coin with an attractive matt tone, very fine, the portrait better, scarce Estimate £ 2,000-2,500 There are two distinct portraits on Edward VI crowned bust half-sovereigns, Potter, BNJ 1962 p.135-6. The first is a 'baby-faced' portrait similar to the uncrowned half-sovereigns, with a prominent rounded forehead and plain breast armour. The second is an older, more angular portrait with a smaller ear set lower on the head and decorated breast armour. Both varieties were struck at the Southwark mint, though the second is not represented in the Schneider collection.
