Henry VIII, third coinage, Sovereign, 12.12g., Southwark, type IIb, small module, king enthroned holding orb and sceptre, throne with curved sides, rose at feet, henric 8 di gra agl francie z hibern rex, rev. crowned shield with lion and dragon supporters, hr in cartouche below, slipped trefoil stops, Gothic letters with Roman e, m, and r, m.m. s (Schneider 611 (same dies); N.1825; S.2291), an unusually sharp well-spread specimen with a pleasing reddish tone, about extremely fine, very rare thus Estimate £ 5,000-6,000 provenance: A D Heath, Glendining, 9 September 1937, lot 13 This example shows a developed die flaw at 4 o'clock on the outer beaded circle of the obverse die. Third coinage Sovereigns are typically struck on small flans and this flaw does not normally show. A similar large flan example, also showing the flaw, was in the Clarke Thornhill collection, lot 49.
