1856 "Hidalgos"
Mexico District. 1r. Yellow, block of four and a single, on a cover dated 1856 (Aug. 19), from Mexico to Veracruz, first rate. It paid the double express rate (Extraordinario) of 5r. First Rate for more than 30 leagues, which was twice the rate, to shorten the time of transit. Folding crease across the cover, not affecting the stamps. A 5r. Extraordinario rate ("por extra° del Texas") is uncommon; since this rate is double the rate for the weight, it would have been 1 ounce (the rate table states incorrectly 3r. as the rate for that weight).
