Mulready Caricatures and Illustrated Envelopes
1846 (19 May), envelope from Liverpool to Evesham, addressed to Miss C.S. Cox care of Rev. Davis with a well executed contemporary pen and ink parody of the Penny Black with the portrait of Queen Victoria replaced by a grotesque male profile and the inscriptions reading "free", "penny", "one" and "bluemagnum", red "1" denoting Postage paid in cash, on reverse the envelope with embossed "registered/july 31 1845/no. 507" flap, corresponding to Laschalla's registered adhesive envelope (described as the earliest known pre- gummed patent envelope). This hand drawn caricature has no recorded counterpart and despite extensive research, no contemporary explanation of the inscription "bluemagnum" has been traced. Some small wrinkles and faint stains. Unique
