Auction: 26015 - "The Treasure of the Eagles" Collection of Albania - Part I
Lot: 3023

(x) Austrian Albania (1797-1806; 1814-1918)
Budua
1844 (March 30). Entire letter from the Bishop of Shkodër (Scutari), Apostolic Mission of Pulati, to Baron de Jessé, President of the Central Council of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith in Lyon, France, bearing a neat strike of the oval "budua" postmark, red “TS” transit handstamp applied in the Kingdom of Sardinia, red French entry c.d.s., and French “13” décimes due h.s. on front; initially charged on reverse with manuscript “10” kr. The letter was exceptionally posted at the port of Budva (Budua) rather than via the usual route from Cattaro. Interesting contents concerning the situation of the Catholic dioceses established in Ottoman Albania. A fascinating cover with about five recorded with this postmark.

provenance: Markus Gmähle
note: Cattaro (Kotor) was the principal port where letters from the Catholic Missions of northern Ottoman Albania (Shkodër, Lezhë, Pulati) were normally embarked for maritime transport. In order to avoid the lengthy and often severe transport and disinfection procedures imposed on correspondence originating in Ottoman Albania, only on rare occasions were such letters dispatched from smaller Montenegrin ports, such as Budua (Budva), all considered part of the so-called “Austrian Albania".
