Postal History
1860 (15 Jan.) much travelled envelope to Royal Marine Light Infantry, Woolwich "via Marseilles", showing boxed "paid" handstamp (type 10) in red with faint Hong Kong despatch on the reverse with London arrival (28.2), redirected to "HMS Queen Portsmouth" with Portsmouth arrival (29.2), redirected to Portland with Portsmouth despatch (4.3) with London arrival (5.3), it would seem that the letter was now opened and resealed with two Letter Branch red wax seals with boxed handstamps "returned for/4 postage" and "redirected/postage paid", both struck in red, and pen cancelled and finally redirected to Lisbon and with "1d" and "9" rate marks. An unusual and interesting cover. Photo
