Lot: 294
China, Republic (Warlord era), Order of Golden Lion (Order of Extreme Bravery), 63mm, gilt and enamel, very fine
This Order is understood to have been instituted circa 1925 under Zhang Zuolin but has also been attributed to Generalissimo Tsang Tso-Lin (1875-1928), Supreme Commander of Manchuria and the Three Eastern Staes.
Either way, it is undoubtedly an award for gallantry, for the characters to the centre state: 'Red-bellied devotion (whole hearted loyalty), sincere & loyal, bold & courageous.'
Another example is known to be housed in the Mohler Collection, Hoover Institue, Stanford University.
