1914-15 Star (Lieut. R. Scott-Moncrieff. R. Scots.), British War and Victory Medals (Capt. R. Scott-Moncrieff.), Defence and War Medals 1939-45, unnamed as issued, mounted as worn by Spink & Son, contact marks throughout, pitting from Star, minor edge wear, otherwise very fine, sold together with commission document signed by King Edward VII (5)
Robert Scott-Moncrieff was born in Kamptree, India on 4 May 1887, the son of Captain William Scott-Moncrieff of the 2nd Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, and his wife Alice Margaret. The young Scott-Moncrieff attended Marlborough College and later R.M.C. Sandhurst, receiving his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant on 8 February 1908. According to the Army List he appears to have been an advanced Lieutenant with the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) from at least October 1912.
He served with his Regiment during the Great War and was stationed in the Africa Theatre to serve in the Cameroon Campaign. Scott-Moncrieff disembarked there on 24 August 1914 and was attached to the 2nd Battalion, Nigeria Regiment with whom he was made Captain on 13 May 1915. The medal roll notes on Scott-Moncrieff’s entry “re-absorbed British Unit 24.7.15.”.
Shortly before the end of the war, Scott-Moncrieff was married to Ruth Isobel Eadon at Bridge, Kent. His address upon his return home is noted as Fossoway Lodge in Kinross-shire, Scotland.
In his later years Scott-Moncrieff appears to have been Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Kinross, a position from which he resigned on 15 March 1955 (as reported in the Edinburgh Gazette 18 March 1955). He died the following year at the age of 69 in Dumfries, Scotland at which time he was residing at ‘The Firs’ in Biggar, Lanarkshire; sold together with copied research including M.I.C. and medal rolls, as well as his commission document which contains the signature of King Edward VII to the upper left-hand corner.
