Note one of fourteen officers of the Regiment to earn the Fenian Raid 1866 clasp.
Frederick George Berkeley was born at Bloomsbury, London on 23 April 1841, the son of Charles and Susan Berkeley. His father, a solicitor, lived on Russell Square and was able to educate his children at home, as such the young Berkeley appears there on the census in 1851 as a scholar. He was commissioned Ensign with the 47th (Lancashire) on 13 July 1858 and later promoted Lieutenant on 14 February 1860.
Posted to Canada he arrived at Nova Scotia in 1861 as part of the effort to reinforce the Canadian Border following the Trent Affair. Whilst there he was promoted Captain on 21 June 1864, the rank he still held when the Fenian raids were launched on 1866. As such they saw service during the raids with the arrival of the 47th and 16th Regiments of Foot in the Niagara area signalling the final end of the conflict.
Berkeley was later posted to Barbados in 1868 and from there to Ireland in 1870, continuing to serve he was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel in July 1881. It was at this time that the Regiment was amalgamated to form the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, making Berkeley one of the first Battalion Commanders in the Regiment's history.
Placed on half-pay in 1893, he was advanced to the rank of Major-General commanding the 47th Regiment District in August 1897. Settling at the Almners, Chertsey, Surrey he died on 3 December 1906; his coffin was carried by his four sons, one of whom Charles Walter was a member of the 3rd Lancashire Militia; sold together with copied research.
