India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Hazara 1888 (701 Pte. M. Navan 2d Bn. Northd Fus.), contact marks, edge bruise, otherwise very fine
Matthew Navan was born in Galway, Ireland and worked as a labourer prior to joining the Northumberland Fusiliers after being recruited by Captain Buchanan at Newcastle on 9 September 1884. Given regimental number 701 and posted to the 1st Battalion, he likely went with them to Dublin. However, he was not to serve at home for long and disembarked at Bombay with the 2nd Battalion on 11 September 1885 for service in the Hazara Campaign, being present at Mean Meer by the end of February 1886 with ‘C’ Company.
Navan was next stationed in South Africa to serve in the Boer War with the 2nd Battalion. There he died of disease on 5 May 1900 at Dewetsdorp and was buried in the English Common Cemetery. His next of kin were listed as his brother Michael and his sister Norah. Navan is further entitled to a Queen’s South Africa Medal with clasps for Cape Colony, Orange Free State, and Transvaal; sold together with copied research including medal rolls.
