Lot: 206

(x) Banco Central de Emision, Republica de Panama, 1 Balboa, 1941, serial number 022532,
Only a small number of these banknotes, known as the 'Arias Seven Day' notes still exist, as they were recalled shortly after being issued and mostly destroyed. The Banco Central was authorised to issue up to 6,000,000 Balboas in notes, but only 2,700,000 Balboas were issued on 2nd October 1941. Just one week later, Dr. Richard Adolfo de la Guardia, with backing from the United States, overthrew President Arias in a coup. The new administration ordered the destruction of these issued notes, and very few survived.
