Auction: 25888 - The Jeffrey Wong Collection of World Banknotes - Part I
Lot: 121
(x) Government of India, 50 Rupees, Madras, ND (1930), serial number V/1 728597,
The third distinct branch-designated 50 Rupees note of this type offered in this sale. Similar to the previous lots, it is printed in rich maroon, brown, and green hues. The obverse features the profile portrait of King George V wearing the Imperial Crown of India at right, with a matching watermark to the left. Serial numbers are positioned at upper right and lower left. The reverse displays language panels surrounding the denomination at centre.
Situated on the southeastern coast of British India, Madras (present-day Chennai) served as one of the major administrative, commercial, and maritime centres of the empire. As the capital of the Madras Presidency, it played a crucial role in regional governance, foreign trade, and the movement of goods through its strategic port.
Please note that the PMG holder incorrectly lists this note as issued for Karachi and signed by Dennings; the correct branch is Madras, and the signature is that of J. B. Taylor.
High-denomination notes such as the 50 Rupees were primarily used for larger governmental and commercial transactions, and are increasingly scarce today. This issue remains one of the most iconic representations of British India's numismatic legacy.
