(x) East African Currency Board, *TOP POP* 1 Rupee, Mombasa, 7th April 1920, serial number A/4 25005,
This spectacular banknote features vivid red, brown, and olive-green tones, with a portrait of King George V at the right. It bears the signatures of Mercer, Bottomley, and Ezechiel. Shortly after issue, the East African Currency Board transitioned from Rupees to Florins, rendering the Rupee notes obsolete. This particular note was soon replaced by a 1 Florin note of identical design.

An often-overlooked design element is the animal motif on the note's reverse. Collectors of East African Currency Board notes are well acquainted with the iconic lion design, which is featured across the reverse of many issues. However—watermarks aside—the hippopotamus vignette on the reverse of the 1 Rupee (and later 1 Florin) is the only other animal used on East African Currency Board banknotes.

A rare banknote, seldom seen in such a fantastic grade.
