The British Guiana Bank was established on 11 November 1836 and began operations on 16 February 1837 in Georgetown and on 6 March 1837 in New Amsterdam, making it the first commercial bank in the colony. After nearly 80 years, the bank was taken over by the Royal Bank of Canada in November 1913.

According to SCWPM and Banknote Book, only $5 and $20 have known dates extending into 1900s, with no mentioned record of a $100 appearing as 19--, only as 18--, a phenomenal note and an incredible rarity which evokes the iconic designs of the Bank of England black and white notes.
