William Sidney Arthur Stewart enlisted to join the Royal Flying Corps and disembarked in France on 16 August 1914. His service number was 630. He started the Great War as an Air Mechanic 1st Class and by the end of the war he appears on the RAF Muster Roll as a Chief Master Mechanic. He was promoted to Warrant Officer Class 1 on 15 May 1934 and on 3 February 1937, he was appointed Station Warrant Officer R.A.F. Hawkinge, Folkestone, Kent. He was awarded his M.B.E. in 1939.
