Daniel Dodgin began his military career as an Adjutant on 9 November 1791 with the 2nd Regiment Dragoon Guards. He was then promoted to Lieutenant-Captain on 6 May 1800. The following year, Dodgin transferred from the Dragoon Guards to the 54th Regiment of Foot in April 1801 and in 1802, he was promoted to Captain. On the 7 June 1803, he transferred from the 54th Regiment of Foot to the 60th Regiment of Foot but curiously, on 9 July 1803 he is also recorded for having transferred from the 60th Regiment of Foot to the 66th Regiment of Foot. This latter regiment is the one he remained with for the rest of his military career. In June 1807 he was promoted to Major and finally in June 1813 he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. On 4 June 1815, Dodgin was nominated to become a Companion of the Order of the Bath.
