D.F.M. London Gazette 23 March 1945, the original recommendation states:
'Flight Sergeant Allen has navigated a Lancaster aircraft on 27 successful bombing missions against the enemy. Included amongst the targets he has attacked are many such distant and heavily defended ones as Stettin, Stuttgart, Duisurg and Freiburg, including mining sorties in the Baltic. By his skilful navigation coupled with his coolness under fire and unshakeable efficiency in most difficult circumstances, he has made a considerable contribution to the success of his crew. He has instilled complete confidence in his captain and crew. I consider his magnificent work together with his excellent fighting spirit and courage merit the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal.'
Gerald William Allen flew with No. 12 Squadron from R.A.F. Wickenby, Lancashire during the final years of the Second World War. His station commander added to the fine words of the recommendation by stating:
'Flight Sergeant Allen, whilst displaying exceptional fearlessness in the face of the enemy, has always maintained a high standard of skill and initiative as a Navigator. He can always be relied upon to make the most of the navigational side at his disposal and he has contributed in no small measure to the fine record of his captain and crew. I recommend that the fine work done by this N.C.O. and his keenness to operate merit recognition by the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal.'
Finally his base commander added:
'Flight Sergeant Allen has proved himself to be a Navigator of great skill and ability and to possess courage and fearlessness in the face of enemy opposition, meriting great praise. I recommend that his fine record and zealous endeavours should be reward by the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal.'
At the time of his recommendation Allen had flown 27 sorties with flying time totalling 150 hours; Sold together with copied research and an original telegram from Lord Royden, Chairman of the London Midland & Scottish Railway Company, congratulating Allen on his award.
