Posted to South Africa the next year on 8 November 1899 he was appointed an Orderly and earned his 'mention' for the period after the breaking of the Boer defences on the Tugela River as the British advanced to Ladysmith.

He was advanced Corporal on 20 August 1901 whilst serving with the 15 Field Hospital Anglo-Boer War. This Hospital served the 5 Infantry Brigade and was largely responsible for treating the wounded of the Queen's and Liverpool Regiments.
