Ernest Sharp was born at Keighley, Yorkshire, the son of Frederick and Susannah Sharp and attested there with the 8th Battalion, West Riding Regiment. Entering the war in France on 7 September 1915 and earned his M.M. during a year that the Battalion saw action on the Ancre and later at the Battle of Messines.
The 8th Battalion was disbanded in February 1918 and Sharp was posted to the 9th Battalion. He was still with this unit on 22 March 1918 when the Battle of St. Quentin began, the result was the German forces steamrollered through the British front line forcing a number of units into desperate last stands and holding actions. Sharp was one of those killed in action during the bloody fighting, he is commemorated upon the Arras Memorial; sold together with copied research.
