The 1918 D.S.O. group of three awarded to Lieutenant Colonel R. Le Butt, Machine Gun Corps

Distinguished Service Order, G.V.R. silver-gilt and enamel; British War and Victory Medals (Lt. Col. R. Le Butt.), with M.I.D. oak leaves, minor contact wear, the enamel to the first slightly chipped on the right-hand ray, overall very fine (3)

Ralph Chaloner Le Butt was born at Richmond, Surrey in April 1875, the son of Edwin and Anges Le Butt. His father died whilst he was still young but Le Butt was taken in by his grandparents and appears to have built a good career for himself, appearing on the 1911 census as a Theatre Director.

The outbreak of the Great War saw him commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 10 March 1915 and further advanced Lieutenant on 1 October 1915. Posted to the West Yorkshire Regiment with the rank of Captain on 9 November 1915, he transferred to the Machine Gun Corps on 2 January 1916.

Advanced Major on 14 October 1916 Le Butt was appointed Divisional Machine Gun Officer on 30 June 1917. Promoted Lieutenant Colonel on 27 December 1917 he continued to service in this role until resigning his commission retaining the rank in 1921; sold together with copied research.
