Living in Chepping Wycombe, Buckinghamshire in 1939 he appears upon the census that year as a member of the Special Constabulary. During the war however he served as the Fire Guard Officer for High Wycombe, being awarded the B.E.M. as a result. Sadly, Dumbleton did not live much longer, dying at Wycombe on 18 August 1947; sold together with copied research together with a presentation letter for the B.E.M., with its envelope and Special Constabulary Medal and photograph of the recipient.
