Walter Linley was born in Hemsworth, Yorkshire in January 1914 and enlisted in the Royal Air Force in January 1931. His pre-war appointments included service as an A.C. 1 (Fitter) in No. 207 Squadron at R.A.F. Bircham Newton in the mid-1930s and he was serving as a Flight Sergeant at the time of being mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 14 January 1944, refers).
