Jack Carrington was born on 29 December 1910, he was the son of Thomas and Ellen Carrington, of Ilkeston, Derbyshire; husband of Annie Winifred Carrington, of Ilkeston. He enlisted into the Sherwood Foresters on 17 April 1928 and was promoted to Lance Corporal in July 1931 serving with the 5th Battalion. The Battalion was embodied on the 28 August 1939 and Carrington was to serve in France as part of the B.E.F. from 18 November 1939, returning to the U.K. from Brest on 15 June 1940. He was to be sent to Singapore via Halifax, Nova Scotia and Bombay arriving on 29 January 1942, he was taken P.O.W. on 15 February 1942 and was sent to work on the Thai-Burma railway, working with No.4 work Battalion, starting at Noug Pladuk ending in Tarsoa, covering a distance of 130 miles. He died as a result of debility at Tarsoa on 1 August 1943 and is buried in the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, Thailand.
