Edward Charles Cracknell was born 2 May 1891 at Holdenby, Northampton and worked as a farmer before he attested into the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry on 15 May 1911.
He landed at Le Havre on the Western Front on 5 June 1916 with 'A' Squadron. Two months later, he was promoted to Corporal and qualified as a sniper. In August 1917, the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry disbanded to became absorbed into the 6th Battalion, Wilshire Regiment. At this time he had the second service number 204122. By December that same year, he was transferring for commission. He then later transferred to the Machine Gun Corps Cavalry and on 12 November 1918, he was appointed Second Lieutenant.
Cracknell served in the Second World War as part of the Home Guard in the Salisbury Plain District.
Further entitled to the Defence Medal 1939-45 for his services to the Home Guard, with whom he served between 15 May 1940 - 31 December 1944. Lot comes with certificate confirming his Second World War service, certificate from the Machine Gun Corps, the cardboard box in which the Defence Medal was issued and copied research.
