Three: Driver L. P. Sly, Royal Artillery

Leo Patrick Sly was born on 28 March 1896 in Landport, Hampshire to George Henry James Sly, a stay cutter, and his wife Elizabeth Sarah. Sly was the third child out of five, and the third son. By the age of five, his mother had died, and by the age of 15, he was working as a Stay Factory Fitter along with his two elder brothers who worked as Stay Factory Cutters and Folders respectively.

When Sly was 17 years old he enlisted to join the 2/1st Hampshire Battery, with colours for four years of service on 9 February 1914. His service number at this time was 1097. At the end of the year on 12 December 1914, he was posted to India. Sly was later awarded a Good Conduct Badge on 5 August 1916 and increased pay to Class I from 1 May 1916.

Sly discharged from service on 24 January 1919 and was further entitled to the Territorial Force War Medal. On 20 November 1920, he married Ivy Kathleen Crocker in Buckland, Portsmouth and on the 1939 census, he is described as living with his wife on Malins Road, Portsmouth with the profession of trolley bus driver. He later died on 13 January 1979 following a cardiorespiratory arrest. He is described as being a retired bus driver.
