A Great War casualty Pair to Private E. Edwards, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment, who was killed in action on 23 October 1917

Ernest Edwards was born at Burton on Trent in 1885 and was the son of Henry and Sarah Edwards, of 24, Sydney St., Burton-on-Trent; husband of Mabel Emily Edwards, of 129, Prince's St., Derand. He enlisted at Derby in September 1916. Edwards suffered from Trench Fever from 6 March 1917 and spent three days in hospital with No.107 Field Ambulance. He recovered from this but was killed in action on 23 October 1917 whilst serving with the 15th Battalion and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Passchendaele, Belgium.

The Battalion moved to assembly positions as supporting Battalion to 105th Brigade, in the general attack on morning of 22nd inst on enemy positions South of Houthulst Forest. Casualties from 21-23rd October were:

Officers: 1 Killed; 1 Wounded; 1 Missing.
O.R. 15 Killed; 160 Wounded; 20 Missing.

Edwards was purportedly shot in the head whilst trying to take a German pillbox.
