(x) A Great War casualty Pair to Lance Corporal J. Summerill, Duke of Wellington's Regiment, formerly Yorkshire Regiment, who was killed in action on 28 September 1918, the same day where one of his unit won a Victoria Cross

John Summerill was born in New Lampton, Durham and was the son of Mrs S. Summerill of 5, Mill Row, New Lambton, Fence Houses, County Durham. He enlisted into the Yorkshire Regiment on 7 December 1914. He entered the war in France on 24 August 1915. Not long after arriving in the trenches, Summerill suffered with ill health and was admitted to hospital twice with dysentery in September 1915. He was then sent back to England in November to receive treatment at Eastleigh. Summerill was then promoted Lance Corporal and returned back to the Western Front in March 1916. He then transferred to the 5th Battalion, Duke of Wellington's Regiment on 26 July 1918 under the new service number 34502. He was killed in action two months later on 28 September 1918, where one of his unit won a Victoria Cross on the same day. Summerill is buried in the Grand Ravine British Cemetery. He was further entitled to the 1914-15 Star.
