Four: Petty Officer W. Steptoe, Royal Navy, later Royal Fleet Reserve

William Steptoe was born in St. Pancras, Middlesex on 13 March 1871. He worked as a painter before he enlisted on the 13 March 1886 (please note the clerical error on his service record) for a period of 12 years. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. Impregnable on 27 September 1886. Steptoe then served as an Ordinary Seaman aboard H.M.S. Agincourt from the 18 March 1889 and progressed to Able Seaman aboard H.M.S. Ruby on the 6 December 1889. He then advanced to Leading Seaman aboard H.M.S. Sans Pariel and then to Petty Officer 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. Edinburgh on the 21 March 1896. He then advanced to Petty Officer 1st Class aboard H.M.S. Camperdown on 27 November 1898.

Steptoe then transferred to H.M. Coast Guard as Commissioned Boatman on 30 May 1902 while stationed at the Coast Guard station at Cliffe Creek. He later served at Gravesend in October 1907 and Donnenook in March 1908.

Steptoe was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in January 1913 before retiring in February. Just over one year later, on 23 November 1914, Steptoe joined the Royal Fleet Reserve at Portsmouth and served throughout the Great War aboard Merchant Fleet Auxiliary Ships. He was demobilised on 6 March 1919.
