(x) Four: Sergeant J. Briscoe, Small Arms School Corps, formerly East Lancashire Regiment

1914 Star with clasp (9138 L. Cpl J. Briscoe. 2/E. Lan: R.); British War and Victory Medals (9138 Pte. J. Briscoe. E. Lan. R.), Army L.S. & G.C., G.V.R., (3377594 Sjt. J. Briscoe. C. Of S.A. & M.G.S.), very fine (4)

James Briscoe was born 29 June 1887, a pre War soldier was based in South Africa at the start of the War, the Battalion went back to England and then on 6 November 1914 to Le Havre, France. Listed as wounded 31 December 1915 with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, with the 6th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment. Post War he was still in the East Lancashire Regiment as he had the newer seven digit number. He then transferred unit and earned an incredibly scarce Long Service Medal by army order 150 in 1927 with the Small Arms School. Believed to have been discharged pre 1939.

The School of Musketry was the original name for the unit/establishment and during the World War I with the importance of machine guns a new unit for testing (in the field) was formed the Machine Gun School. In 1919 the School of Musketry was renamed the Small Arms School to any confused with the newly formed Machine Gun School. In 1923 the two schools were merged to give the new title the Corps of Small Arms and Machine Gun School. By 1926 the title changed again to the Headquarters Small Arms School. This suggests that his Long Service Medal was one of the last to be issued in the short time the unit existed.
