Horace Ernest Botham Tiplady was born at Liverpool, Lancashire on 23 September 1890 and was a van boy before he enlisted into the Royal Navy on 23 September 1908. He served on Fox between 1 June 1910 - 15 July 1912 and then served on Exmouth from 1 July 1913 - 31 August 1917. He then served on Vivid I between 1 September 1917 - 15 November 1917 followed by Victorian from 16 November 1917 - 18 December 1918. Tiplady joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on 13 September 1920 and completed his service in the Royal Navy on 8 June 1921.
