Charles Ward was born at Balderstone, near Sheffield, Yorkshire. He attested into the York & Lancaster Regiment at Pontefract on 21 October 1890. He served in South Africa for the first time between 14 May 1892 - 15 September 1894 before serving in St. Helena between 16 September 1894 - 9 January 1896. Ward then served in Mauritius between 10 January 1896 - 15 February 1897 before serving in India from 16 February 1897 - 2 December 1898. He then returned Home on 2 December 1898 until 12 December 1899. Ward was sent to South Africa for a second time serving between 13 December 1899 - 30 August 1902, he returned Home on 31 August 1902 and was discharged on 15 October 1902. Ward re-enlisted on 1 September 1914 with the service numbers 4746 and 256024. He served in the Balkans from 6 August 1915 but was wounded as a result of a gun shot wound to the wrist on 9 August 1915. He was invalided to England departing from Mudros on the Aquitania on 14 August 1915. He spent time in Ireland and then transferred to the Labour Corps at Pontefract on 30 June 1917 and was to see further service in France. Ward is further entitled to a 1914-15 Star Trio.
