John Henry Ryder Boulton was born at Marylebone, Middlesex and was a porter before he attested into the Royal Army Medical Corps on 18 January 1893. He served at Malta from 13 October 1894 - 6 April 1898 before serving in Egypt between 7 April 1898 - 28 October 1898. Boulton then served at Home between 29 October 1898 - 14 March 1899. His service papers then state that he served at Indian Trooping between 15 March 1899 - 3 June 1899, he returned Home briefly serving between 4 June 1899 - 2 November 1899. Boulton then served in South Africa from 3 November 1899 - 2 January 1903 before returning Home on 3 January 1903 - 27 February 1905.
