General Service 1918-62, 1 clasp, Palestine (6285270. Pte. N. W. Rutter. The Buffs.), very fine
Norman Wilfred Rutter was born in Dover to Albert Arthur Rutter and Kate Elizabeth Rutter on 14 January 1919. He married Violet Jenkins in October 1935 in Newport, Wales but later move to Hengistbury Head, Hampshire. Before the Second World War, he served in Palestine with the 1st Battalion, The Buffs from circa 1936 onwards. During the war, he served with the Royal Artillery in the 4th Maritime Regiment at the rank bombardier on the infantry landing ship S.S. Empire Broadsword, which had previously been involved in the D-Day landings, landing troops on Sword Beach. Rutter died when S.S. Empire Broadsword was mined and sunk off Normandy on the 2 July 1944.
