John Bell was born on 23 October 1898 at Hurstbourne Prior, Whitchurch, Hampshire and was a carter before he enlisted into the Royal Marines on 2 October 1916. He served on Repulse between 25 August 1917 - 17 December 1918 and is entitled to a British War and Victory Medal Pair. Bell was awarded his L.S. & G.C. in March 1932. He served on S.S. Daghestan in a D.E.M.S. capacity when she was sunk by German U-Boats on 25 March 1940 and is commemorated on the Chatham Memorial.
