The Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque to Private Aubert Benson, Canterbury Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force who died of pneumonia on 5 November 1918, but who also suffered a gunshot wound to the leg resulting in it being amputated

Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque (Aubert Benson), extremely fine

Aubert Benson was born at Ham on 26 May 1890 and was the son of Mr J. Benson of Ham, Hungerford, Berkshire. He enlisted on 30 April 1916 at Trentham. He embarked from Wellington on HMNZT 62 Mokoia on the 21 August 1916 and landed at on 24 October 1916 Plymouth. He served in France from 21 December 1916. Benson was wounded in action on 17 June 1917 which resulted in an amputation below the knee of his left leg. He returned to the U.K. He died of pneumonia at Wolverhampton on 5 November 1918 and is buried in the Cannock Chase War Cemetery, Staffordshire. His British War and Victory Medal Pair along with his Memorial Scroll were sent to his father.
