(x) 1914 Star (9958 Pte J. Moynes. 2/Conn: Rans.); Mercantile Marine War Medal 1914-18 (2) (John Mac-Farlane; Frederick H. Stewart); Territorial Force War Medal 1914-19 (T-274 Pte. F. R. Thompson. Oxf. & Bucks. L.I.), very fine (4)

John Moynes enlisted into the 2nd Battalion, Connaught Rangers on 14 August 1914 and served on the Western Front. The 2nd Battalion suffered such heavy losses that by December it merged with the 1st Battalion. The 2nd Battalion was also famous for popularising the song 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary' while they were stationed at Boulogne on the Western Front in August 1914. The song became popular back home when Daily Mail correspondent George Curnock reported: "a company of the 2nd Battalion Connaught Rangers passed us singing, with a note of strange pathos in their rich Irish voices, a song I had never heard before..." followed by the accompanying lyrics.

Frederick Hone Stewart was born in Bromley by Bow in 1887 and served with the Mercantile Marine throughout the First World War. This entitled him to the Mercantile Marine and British War Medals on 19 September 1919.
